Puran poli

 

Puran Poli is a traditional Indian sweet flatbread, often made during festivals like Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, and Diwali, and is especially popular in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other parts of South India. It is a sweet, stuffed flatbread made with a filling of chana dal (split chickpeas) and jaggery, flavored with cardamom. The dough is made from wheat flour and is rolled out into a thin disc, with the sweet filling inside.

Ingredients for Puran Poli:For the dough:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (atta)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for softness)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (optional, for color)
  • 1-2 tbsp ghee (for dough)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Water (to knead the dough)
  • For the puran (filling):

    • 1 cup chana dal (split yellow gram)
    • 3/4 to 1 cup jaggery (adjust sweetness to your taste)
    • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
    • 1 tbsp ghee (for frying)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (optional, for color)
  • 1-2 tbsp ghee (for dough)
